Octopussy | Monday, October 10, 2005 |
I discovered on the weekend that this part of the coast is home to the quite, quite lethal Blue Ringed Octopus. Apparently though, they seldom bite unless provoked. So that's ok then...
Makes me think that I'll be more careful around rock pools from now on (not that I make it a habit to go grasping around for bivalves, but still)
At Circular Quay yesterday the water was thick with jellyfish although I believe these to be somewhat less lethal than our eight-armed bandit. No camera at the time so you'll have to take my word that they looked quite serene bobbing around the ferries.
The octopus can commonly be found in shallow tide pools after storm, searching for crabs and bivalves.
