Olympic pelicans

Pelicans.

I'm sure they've got their evolutionary niche, but Darwinism must have been having a bit of a laugh.

What's funnier is that for the moment, our apartment is in Pelican Street. That doesn't mean that it's about to relocate itself, although given the gale force winds at lunchtime today that would not have come as a suprise, rather that we'll almost certainly move once the lease is up as a results of Gillian working further north than I.

I'm not sure if Australia has native Pelicans, but there were certainly plenty of them out at Homebush on Sunday when we visited the galaxy sized Ikea there. Theoritically at least, the ship laden with our worldly goods should dock on Friday. That's according to the shipping company we used in the UK. At the time of writing this however, Sydney Ports don't seem to know who's booked in to arrive past the next couple of days, so we can't be certain.

In preparation for our gear to be disgorged from the depths of this monster (nearly 300m in length, and just shy of 55,000 tonnes when empty, with our stuff accounting for nearly all of the 9,000 tonnes of cargo that it, or I suppose, she, can hold), we've had to brave the sweedish dante-esqe experience for what I hope is the last time for a while.

So today, 57 boxes of delivery later (though to be fair, 44 of those were storage containers and lids (22 boxes, 22 lids, so it's not quite that bad), we're now the proud owners of masses of flat pack furniture. I [flexes muscles] built Gillian's chair and by that measure of progress, we'll be building shelves and other things for months to come yet.

So, what's all this got to do with Olympic Pelicans? Not much really, except that I suppose Homebush is kind of like Stratford, and was the site of the 2000 Olympics and the imposing stadia are just across the Pelican infested lake.

Tomorrow, or whenever I can locate the scanner under all this flat pack, there may be some insights into Australian business life. Watch this space...
