Pirates! | Monday, December 05, 2005 |
As forecast, today was sunny and warm and Gillian and I re-ignited plans to head to the Dawn Fraser pool in Balmain after work that were dampened somewhat last week by rain.
As a bit of a treat I thought I'd go round there on the ferry and as luck would have it there was one leaving almost the very moment I arrived at Circular Quay. I dashed onto the boat, found a seat and enjoyed the ride.
Until the boat was attacked by pirates! Pirates - in Sydney harbour. What's the world coming too?
The valiant crew managed to repel them, but we were taking on water so had to set down in Darling Harbour rather than make it all the way around to Balmain West. Consequently, I had to get a cab from there to Balmain and if you hear any stories about me getting on the wrong boat, I can tell you that they're all lies.
By the time got to the pool I was feeling a bit frazzled but paid my $3.40 to enter into a spidery, rustic haven on the edge of the city. The pool itself is an enclosed sea pool, but quite, quite spidery (a generic definition for a little overgrown), complete with murky water, slime on the bottom and sundry limpet type things clinging to any frequently submerged surface. There was a guys water polo team going through their very vigorous training (that seemed to require a lot of diving off the edge), and a random pair of females in quite brief bikinis (considering the leaping around they were doing), one of which is co-incidentally (honest) in the picture. That's also the ledge that the polo players were running towards and diving off, so you can see it's quite a respectable height.
What you can't see are the Jellyfish.
The water was a bit cool to start with, but I soon got used to it though we didn't stay there for all that long. Although I'd had an altrication with black beard, Gillian had run to the pool and arrived before me despite taking a bit of a tumble on the way.
To continue the nautical theme, we had a very pleasent meal of fish and chips on the way home, then spoilt it by having to go to the supermarket :-(
