Periplaneta australiasiae

Another thing they don't tell you about Australia is the amount of Cockroaches that infest the place.

On our first full evening in the country we went off to a party and got off the bus a bit early. The pathway up the side of road had more than its fair share scurrying around under-crunch-foot. The place in town never had any - I suspect that in part this is because it was a newer building.

The new place however, does have a few of these un-invited guests which will no doubt continue to cause upset (as this morning) when Gillian got up to find a large specimin scuttling around the kitchen floor.

Can't say I'm that keen on the idea of them being around, but they're an integral part of Sydney life and a far preferable in my mind than spiders.

But she didn't understand,
she just smiled and held my hand.
Rent a flat above a shop,
cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags and play some pool,
pretend you never went to school.
But still you'll never get it right,
cos when you're laid in bed at night,
watching roaches climb the wall,
if you call your Dad he could stop it all.
Pulp, Common People

Preferable to spiders they may be, but I feel a trip to the store tonight coming on. I'll be arming myself with the finest synthetic pyrethroids money can buy. The synthetic stuff is based on a naturually occuring susbtance from the Chrysanthemum. Fancy that!
