Swell

According to the TV last night, yesterday bought a five metre swell to the coastline resulting in large, large waves. Bigger even than the big ones last week. Up at Newcastle (about 150kms North of Sydney) there was a surf competition on and the contestants were really going for it judging by the footage on the news.

I thought they were pretty big where we were are in Manly but a little further south the sea (and the surfers) were really putting on a good show. Cronulla too got its piece of the action with 8 swimmer rescues in 90 minutes (this is despite the fact that with the exception of a small southern piece of Manly beach where it's very sheltered all the swimming beaches in Sydney were closed). One of the surfers at Cronulla is missing too.

Sydney Ferries cancelled afternoon sailings between Circular Quay and Manly (and they're pretty substantial boats). We stayed at elsewhere on Saturday night after a party so caught the ferry back in the morning. At about 0915 the "Queenscliff" was certainly wallowing about when it crossed into the small piece of bay exposed to the open sea. I think that's the first time they've suspended service since we've been here (at least due to weather anyway)

It looks like things are calming down a bit now though there's still a big swell predicted for today.
