Ice ice baby

Last weekend saw Karen and Pete come and stay, partly for a general visit and specifically because those cheating Wellington Hurricanes were playing local heros, the Waratahs at the Aussie Stadium in the final round (before semi/finals) of the Super 14's.

Before heading to the game we stopped in at Minus 5, an exercise if ever there was one in style over substance. Quite why it seems like a good idea to open a bar located in prime realestate whose only claim to fame is that it's very cold (say, somewhere in the region of -5c) is beyond me, but Gillian wanted to go so we did.

This is after a delicious and quite long lunch so the four of us, already slightly rotund wheezed our way into big thick jackets and gloves in order to be ushered into a small ice bar for a couple of quick drinks.

To be fair, it's done quite well. The walls are ice, the tables, bar numerous sculptures and glasses are all ice. There's an antifreeze waterfall thing, but pretty much everything else is solid ice kept that way through strict climatic control.

It was just a bit boring, that's all. Boring and cheap is fine, boring and expensive less so. I know it's not all about money, but what equates to $20 per drink seems a bit steep. We could have got a couple of decent bottles of wine and enough pizza to make us explode for the same amount, and, as all of us have been cold places for snowboarding in the past I can't even really say it was that novel.

Still, Gillian enjoyed it, and two cocktails each later, we trotted off to watch the Waratahs be robbed.
