The Settlers

For our weekend away we looked at a few different accomodation options including the Mittagong RSL club (which looked pretty decent actually), and a cabin in a camp ground somewhere.

We'd also considered a visit to Eschalot, a restaurant in nearby Bowral which is a two hat winner and specializes in local produce. They do a tasting menu with matched wine which I'm sure is delicious, but it's also pretty pricey.

In the end, we decided that while a flash dinner is nice, we didn't really need it right now and so instead we diverted the money into the accomodation fund and ended up in the winner of the "most romantic getaway in NSW". I can't speak for the competition but they'd have to have been going some to beat the Settlers Hut in Berrima for atmosphere (and spiders - just kidding, thankfully. While conveying the impression of age, the hut had been dismantled and reassembled in its current location and was it seems, cleaned right to the rafters pretty recently)

It is also my belief that the rather well appointed bathroom with basin, flush toilet and clawfoot may have been an addition, along with electricity and a semingly inexhaustable supply of hot water. I like historical accuracy but am not fanatical about it!

Anyway, it was pretty cosy and very nice. The weather was cool enough for us to justify lighting the artfully set fire and enjoying a meal of kangaroo steak and salad, some nice beer (for me) and fizz for Gillian, and cheese and the supplied port for desert.
