4 minutes to go | Monday, January 15, 2007 |
It's fair to say that this song (amongst others of the same ilk) probably drove my parents to distraction whilst I was at home. That's what they get for encouraging us to go out at earn in our school holiday's. I spent my money on a loud Pioneer stereo.
Fortunately this tick (assuming it's only one), will take us to only 6 minutes to rather than the two in the song title that occured in 1953 (corresponding with the invention of the Hydrogen bomb).
Reagan did a fair to middling job in 1984 though, pushing (or at least helping it along with comrades Leonid Brezhnev and Yuri Andropov) it to 3 minutes as a result of the arms race. The halcyon days of 1991 where we had more than 1/4 of an hour left seem ever-so far away.\
I heard on the radio the other day a trailer for a show about differences between the generation X-ers (where the meaning is taken from Wikipedia) and the more recent crops. It seems that a large number of them doubted the long term survival of the world, with atomic war being the #1 suspect. Conversely, the feeling was that the current lot, were much more upbeat. Wait till they get to work and have some of the stuffing knocked out of them! Apparently and to my suprise, I scrape (always was a scraper, just look at my school reports) into the X's, while brother Nick, manages to be painted with the MTV Generation monicker.
Anyway, back the clock. This time it's the recent nuclear test in North Korea that's the driver, rather than some knucklehead in the oval office. I guess this is what they mean by proliferation (which is far more unsavoury than the tasty cream filled profiter rolls)
