Can’t even give it away

We struggle sometimes with not understanding how things are done here on a state and federal basis.
Simon and I both hold NSW driver’s licences and both have selected the donor option when we signed up.
According to the RTA this records our intention to become donors and this information is being used in a trial to form part of the Australian Organ Donor register. This does not actually register us as Organ Donors as we were surprised to hear on the radio this week.
We both need to register via Medicare as well if we want to be on this register. I have registered online but Simon has no Medicare number and will have to download forms for this.
After all this they still require a signature on the letter they send me and if my relatives object they still won’t take the organs.
So, who is now surprised to learn that Australia has one of the lowest organ donation rates in the world?
