9 months. | Saturday, March 31, 2007 |
A lot can happen in nine months and it's the subject of my new favourite song by those novocaine swilling redneck hillbillies, Kings Of Leon.
Knocked up is a very moody piece on the subject of pregnancy; probably. The lyrics don't seem to make all that much sense, but there's a heavy bass guitar and some redneck wailin', and it's all good.
Keeping on the theme (not much of a title otherwise, is it?), nine months is also what David Hicks has been sentenced too. I don't care what he's done particularly - a reasonable legal system can take care of that (note the use of the word legal). At some distant and expensive point in the future, and assuming that we opt to stay here, it's possible that I may apply for citizenship here in Australia.
Given the derisoury attempts by the Australian government to have him repatriated, as the UK managed to do, it's comforting to know that the full resources of the state would be behind me should I find my self being unjustly held in the clutches of some foreign despot. And the tax we pay...
But, it seemns that in 9 months, he'll be a free man - at least within the confines of his notoriety. By his own admission, he *was* up to no good, but 5 years without effective representation seems a little cruel and unusual. It remains to be seen if those 5 years could count against the remaining term, though it seems unlikely. I'm not sure that I like the 12 month ban on talking to the media either for that matter. Not exactly transparent, is it?
And finally, tonight we're watching Marie-Antoinette, who so far, due to the suspect, indifferent nature of the king has no sign of 9 month timelines either. But at least she has her cake.
