Something that never happened in the UK | Monday, April 02, 2007 |
To be fair, there's undoubtedly many things that happen here that never happened in the UK. The daily excitement of crossing Spit Bridge and counting the number of roosting Pelicans being one that springs to mind. I get quite concerned if the mooring poles are empty for days on end, I can tell you.
Today's local excitement though was the coast wide Tsunami alert following the earthquake at 8.453°S, 156.957°E, which is of course (oh, of course!) the Solomon Islands.

Being a mere 40km from the epicentre, Gizo took the brunt of the wave though it seems that relatively few people were killed and that the damage isn't as catastrophic the Boxing Day event. That's scant consolation I suppose.
Here, the Manly ferry service was suspended for several hours for safety concerns, some, but not all the beaches were evacuated, shipping was restricted in the Heads, and it was all, quite, quite strange in a strangely understated manner.
Of course there was the usual mis-information and rumour that one would associated with a fast breaking, potentially lethal news event, but this evening after returning home everything looked very tranquil and frankly, calmer tonight than it has been for several days with a clear sky and a very bright, large full moon lighting the water in a romatic film-like manner.
The bext possible outcome was that with the absence of 1,000 tonnes of water pouring through the front window, the batter for the Sausage Toad resting in the fridge was undisturbed and a good feed was had.
