Drat on the drought

Thursday, May 24, 2007

The current drought about which much has been written for us is largely something that happens to other people. We have no garden, so the water restrictions on watering don't apply, and we're not allowed to wash our car in the garage anyway (because the water drains straight into the ocean).

But, for others living further inland, there's a definite problem and today is the first time that it has directly concerned (as in affected) me.

How so?

Well last year on one of our coastal walks we got to Balmoral and the businesses of Mudgee had a festival showcasing their wines and foods. While there we picked up some spiced pickled quinces which make a very tasty companion to cheese.

We're nearing the end of the jar and I emailed the maker to see if she did mail order. The answer is yes, but the cupboard is bare. Why?

"Unfortunately I was unable to secure quality quinces from along thebanks of the Cudgegong River this year due to drought conditions"

So, no soup for us. Instead, Cumquats will be offered soon so we'll try those instead while hoping for quince friendly rain.
