It's raining ... | Monday, May 14, 2007 |
It is not just the English who are obsessed with the weather, it is an obsession here in Australia as well. If it does not rain there is constant discussion of the drought, if it does rain it is always ‘we really need the rain’.
Whenever I say I am surprised at how rainy it is they say ‘it doesn’t rain here’ and ‘in London it rains all the time’. One woman in my exercise class said that in London in 2001 it rained every day!
So, time for some research. According to the NSW Department of State and Regional Development Sydney has rain 138 days per year, and yes this is greater than one in three days a year, and they have a whopping 1,223 mm of rain a year!
I am not disputing that there is very little rain once you get away from the coast, but in Sydney they should be issuing umbrellas when you get off the plane. The reason for the popularity of Ugg boots here was probably to cover the webbed feet of the Sydneysiders rather than just following fashion from abroad.
Comparing the rainfall to other places, London has an annual rainfall of 593 mm. Alexandra (near where my parents live) has an annual rainfall of 356 mm and even Wellington, my former home and known world wide for its terrible weather, has only 1246 mm of annual rainfall, and that falls in 123 days, so they don’t even have rain as many days as here.
